In 1892 Leitmeier and his mother moved to Graz/Styria, where he began to study at the Philosophical School of the University of Graz in 1904 and was graduated 'Dr.phil.' on June 21st, 1908. In the same year he became private assistant of Doelter at the Mineralogical Department of the University of Vienna, initially became demonstrator, from 1912 on regular assistant and was promoted 'Privatdozent' in September 1916. On April 26th, 1922 he received the title of a ao. Prof., in 1929 he was promoted ao. Prof. and in 1938 he received the title of an o. Prof. of Mineralogy and Petrography.

He was persecuted in times of Nazism as a Jew lost his position and was thrown out of the university on May 28th, 1938.

After the end of World War II Leitmeier returned to the University of Vienna and became o. Professor on November 14th, 1945, and head of the Mineralogical-Petrographical Department (1949/50 dean of the Philosophical School).
In 1946 he also became corresponding member of the Austrian Acedemy of Sciences.

Hans Leitmeier died on June 15th, 1967 in Vienna and was buried in the 'Feuerhalle Simmering' in Vienna, where his widow Dr.phil. Daisy Leitmeier (1905-1993) was also buried more than two decades later.
