The University Library

1365–2015

Especially in the last decades the appearance of the library has undergone major changes. Card catalogues have long become a relic of the past; computers and online catalogues now offer access to the digital and analogue collections which could not be more varied. The library’s almost 50 locations house more than seven million books, as well as various other objects, such as maps and charts that often are also available as digital copies. Through other electronic resources, such as e-books, e-journals and databases, the library has met the challenges of the digital age and continually expanded its scope. The basic purpose of the library, however – to pass down and supply knowledge – was fulfilled at all times. A look back at the origins of the university library gives insight into its checkered history.
