1900
The painting by Gustav Klimt (first exhibited in the Vienna Secession in 1900) is one of four "Faculty paintings" commissioned by the University of Vienna to decorate the ceiling of the Great Hall. After massive public criticism of Klimt's representation, the artist bought back the paintings that remained private until their destruction in 1945.
