Albert Armin Ehrenzweig studied law at the Universities of Vienna and Heidelberg and graduated at the Law School at the University of Vienna on December 18th, 1928 with the academic degree 'Dr. jur.'.
He became "Privatdozent" for Civil Law (Bürgerliches Recht) at the Law School of the University of Vienna and judge.

He was persecuted in times of Nazism as a Jew lost his position and was thrown out of the university on April 8th, 1938. He emigrated to the USA (Berkeley, California) via Switzerland and England in 1939, studied again and obtained a Doctor of Jurisprudence from Chicago University in 1941, an LL. M. in 1942, became a research assistant, a lawyer in 1944 and a professor at the School of Law at the University of California/Berkeley in 1947/48 (until 1974).

In times of Nazism he was also deprived of his academic degree on July 17th, 1942 with the racist argument, that he as a Jew was not considered dignified an academic degree of a German university ('eines akademischen Grades einer deutschen Hochschule unwürdig'). It took 13 years since the deprivation until the regranting of the doctorate took finally place on May 15th, 1955.

In 1961, he was awarded an honorary professorship for private international law at the University of Vienna. His work focused on public international law, international law, foreign law, shipping law and insurance law.

In 1964, at the request of the Faculty of Law and State, the Academic Senate of the University of Vienna decided to award Albert Ehrenzweig the honorary academic title of Honorary Senator, as his "teaching activities and academic production at American universities were a great honor to Austria and the Alma Mater Rudolphina, the site of his academic training." The award ceremony took place on May 12, 1965 as part of the celebrations to mark the 600th anniversary of the university.
