William Henry Welch, Prof. Dr. med.

Die Senatskommission zur Verleihung von Ehrenzeichen und Ehrenmedaillen beantragte, Dr. William Welch, Verwaltungsrat der Rockefeller Foundation, "für seine Mitwirkung an den Spenden der Rockefeller Foundation" die goldene Ehrenmedaille der Universität Wien zu verleihen. Den Anlass boten die Hilfeleistungen, die die Universität Wien sowie ihre Studierenden und Lehrenden nach dem Ersten Weltkrieg erhielten, um die humanitäre Notsituation der Nachkriegsjahre zu lindern.

Der Akademische Senat beschloss in seiner Sitzung am 24. März 1922 die Verleihung der goldenen Ehrenmedaille der Universität Wien an William Welch.

Daraufhin schrieb Welch am 6. November 1922 an den Rektor:

"This recognition and the words of the diploma surpass any service which I have been able to render the University for which I cherish the most profound amiration, and, as a former student of the University, both affection and gratitude.
I am deeply touched by this personal remembrance coming in these days of such great distress and hardship für the University and for Austria. To have any share in the relief of these hard conditions has been a privilege, and I only regret that it has been in my power to do so little. The preservation of the fine traditions, the cultural and scientific spirit and the resources of the University of Viena is of great importance not only for your country but for the whole civilized world."
